Big City Mountaineers (BCM) instills critical life skills in under-served urban youth through transformative wilderness mentoring expeditions. Big City Mountaineers’ founder, Jim Kern, recognized the need for positive adult role models in the lives of urban kids, and brought together a group of adult volunteers and low-income youth on a life-changing wilderness expedition in Montana in 1989. Since then, BCM has developed and perfected a unique team mentoring program delivered across the country, combining 1:1 mentoring with sequential wilderness experiences to develop self-efficacy, responsibility and decision-making skills that lead to positive behavioral change in youth. With the support and encouragement of caring adult mentors, BCM youth overcome challenges and return home prepared to transfer expedition learning from the trail to their daily lives. BCM has a proven track record of improving young peoples’ lives with:
• Increased likeliness to stay in school
• Reduction in violence
• Reduction in drug use
Osprey enables BCM to safely and effectively deliver our mission, and transform the lives of under-served youth. Through generous in-kind and financial support, Osprey has supported BCM youth in ways that will help them thrive throughout the sequence of BCM programs, and when youth return home to their communities.
