The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative Volunteer Vacations
Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) Volunteer Vacations provide a unique opportunity for climbers and hikers who treasure the Fourteeners to help address the negative impacts of foot traffic on these fragile alpine environments.
The Need for Active Stewardship
Colorado’s high peaks are a treasured natural resource that inspire devotion from th ose who visit them. The Fourteeners provide opportunities to connect with the natural world, seek spiritual renewal, engage in healthful exercise, and escape from the pressures of daily life. Unfortunately, the popularity of the Fourteeners is causing a range of negative environmental impacts. With over 500,000 hikers attempting to climb these peaks annually, sensitive alpine habitats along many Fourteener routes have been severely damaged. Left untended, these impacted areas will continue to deteriorate rapidly. Without immediate intervention, the rare plant communities, wildlife habitat, and scenic beauty that make Fourteeners so special may be forever compromised.
Due to the remote nature of these projects, Volunteer Vacations are designed for those who want a unique and physically challenging volunteer experience. Project work requires excellent physical condition and may require heavy lifting. Participants do not need to have technical climbing experience, but should have prior experience hiking at altitudes of 10,000’-14,000’.
Volunteer Vacation participants have a chance to win one of ten Osprey Aether 70 or Ariel 65 backpacks. Thank you Osprey! www.ospreypacks.com
