TheActiveTimes.com – Featuring Ozone Convertible Series – December 8, 2013

December 8, 2013

We’ve all seen those people struggling through the airport, you know, the ones with huge, heavy packs along with another backpack or carry-on that keeps falling off their shoulder—nobody wants to be “that guy.” Instead, check out Osprey’s stripped down Ozone Series that offers up a lightweight and durable convertible suitcase. The new line of luggage has you covered for everything from typical travel to multi-day backpack trips and sightseeing in the city. The Ozone Convertible Series is a wheeled suitcase, a backpack, and a daypack all in one.

The series comes in carry-on size 50L, or 70L for larger adventures, but both weigh less than seven pounds. The daypack is 15L, which is plenty of space for a decent hike. The pack also has all of the components to help you travel more simply. There is a large padded laptop pocket, as well as another pocket for a tablet, and a clip for your keys in the smaller, outer pocket…

TheActiveTimes.com – Featuring Viper 13 – October 11, 2013

October 11, 2013

One of the common traits of all my favorite pieces of gear is versatility. I like gear that can be used for multiple purposes and activities. Versatile gear gives you more chances to use the item and it can save you some cash since you don’t have to purchase multiple pieces of gear to cover all of the things you want to do. This is especially true with a good backpack that is designed from the ground up to be used in multisport endeavors, which is exactly what Osprey had in mind when they designed the Viper 13 hydration pack.

As the name implies, the Viper 13 features 13-liters of storage, which is an excellent size for day hike, long trail run or a mountain bike ride. The pack weighs just 1 pound, 6 ounces (.62 kg) but features Osprey’s trademark high quality construction which makes it feel like it is tough enough to take any abuse you can throw at it. That is much appreciated when you start putting the Viper through its paces on the trail.

Get out! But as you bolt for safety into the less populated hinterland—after all, fewer people means fewer zombies—you’re going to want to carry your survival gear in a pack that has enough space for the bare essentials, but is light and comfortable enough not to impede you while running to safety. The Viper 13 has (you guessed it) 13 liters of storage and a separate pouch for a 3-liter hydration bladder.

Must-Have Bike Commuter Gear: 28 Essentials

Cycling accessories to get you from here to there safely and in style

(…)

These 28 commuter products cover the gamut of situations one may encounter—from a flat tire to wayward motorists. They range from bicycle-friendly bags to handlebar-mounted smartphone holsters, and cover your bike commute from point A to point B. (…)

Osprey Momentum Bike Commuter Bags

From one of the world’s great pack manufacturers comes a relatively slim-profile bike commuter-specific pack that’s absolutely loaded with features. Built with rugged, non-staining Nylon, the Momentum comes in 26L and 34L sizes that, with a compression zipper, allow them to be expanded—the 26L to 31L and the 34L to 42L—to fit extra gear when you need it. Internal buckle sleeves keep laptops up to 17 inches safe and snug, and a highly-reflective, fitted rain cover is integrated into a clandestine zipper pocket to keep your stuff dry on even the most dismal commutes. Other nice features—the kind that make you think Osprey thought of everything—include dedicated external safety light attachment points, U-lock sleeve, zippered pockets on the straps that keep keys (one has a retractable key clip) and phone close at hand, and the company’s proprietary “Lidlock,” for helmet-holding when you’re not riding. In short, the Momentum is the best heavy-load bike commuter bag we’ve seen to date.

TheActiveTimes.com – Featuring Karve 16 – January 3, 2013

January 16, 2013

Whether you call it sidecountry or slackcountry, the value of resort-based backcountry skiing is obvious: wild snow, untracked lines and a new, deeper relationship with the snowy mountains. And it’s all the rage. Fast and quick forays into the deep end of nature’s snowy pool have a unique draw that doesn’t exist inbounds at most resorts. And for those who learn to swim, the rewards are worth it.

Several companies know this, and are making sleek, streamlined packs that are designed to carry essential avalanche equipment (beacon, shovel, probe) along with skis or snowboard, and still offer a little spare room to bring an extra layer, water and some sundries. Their low-profile design also makes them ideal for wearing onto chairlifts.

Osprey’s designers spend a lot of time making packs that surpass expectations, and the Karve 16 provides ample proof of that. A comfy, thermo-sculpted back panel sheds unwanted snow, while diagonal lateral compression straps snugly hug the pack close to your body for an optimal skiing experience. The trim waist strap distributes the load equally over the hips for maximum comfort and dexterity, and external sleeves make use of limited material for quickly accessing the shovel handle and probe. A fully insulated sleeve keeps your hydration hose working on the coldest of days.

Holiday Gear Guide 2012

The Big List: 59 gifts to fit any gear closet (and budget)

A wise man once said (in a non-holiday context), “it’s all about the money.” And when you come right down to it, he was right, even around the holidays. You’ve got lots of people to make happy, and finite resources with which to do it, and that’s a challenge right there.

So we decided to take those two things, happiness and price, and organize a selection of the very best active lifestyle kit we could lay our hands on—road test it, bench test it, even smell test it. Then we spread it out in ascending price order from $0 to $700—from free, DIY lanyard bracelets to mountain packs with air bags that inflate, James Bond-style, in an avalanche.

If that method seems a little mercantile for such a generous-spirited time of year, just think of it as our gift to you—the very best stuff, arranged in the most practical and efficient way, so that rather than stress out puzzling through the money side, you can concentrate on making exactly the right selections, and on how stoked your giftees will be to receive. (…)

Osprey Farpoint 40, $149

Globetrotters will love this lightweight travel pack transformer that can be shouldered like a full-featured backcountry bag, but morphs into a structured, carry-on-compliant duffel. With zip-away shoulder straps and hip belt, and inner and outer compression straps for stabilizing your load, this is the pack of choice for fast, light travel. Just stuff, smoosh secure and go.

TheActiveTimes.com – Featuring Aether and Ariel Series – October 1, 2012

October 1, 2012

I am, I’ve recently come to realize, a pack hoarder. Somehow over the years, I’ve amassed five separate hiking bags—and all for myself! Stuffed haphazardly into my gear closet are an expedition pack, a midsize pack, a simple day pack, a hydration pack and a lumbar pack. Add those to my husband’s personal collection, and we could outfit a small troop of Boy Scouts.

Though I don’t regret purchasing a single one—they’ve gotten me through everything from long treks across Kenya and Patagonia to weekend hikes near my home in the Northeast—I do wonder if I could have been a more conscientious buyer. The bags took up too much precious real estate in various shoebox New York City apartments before we moved into a bigger home and, when added together, cost a pretty penny.

Slideshow: 5 Convertible Backpacks

It turns out there’s an alternative to buying dozens of single-purpose packs. In fact, several gear companies offer covertible packs with components that can be removed and used as smaller bags. In addition to being excellent space savers at home, these packs allow backpackers setting up centralized basecamps to bag peaks on day trips without bringing a separate small pack or hauling along their big one. Click through to the slideshow to read up on the top five convertible packs. (…)

Osprey offers two backpack series with removable day bags: Aether for men and Ariel for women. The mid-size expedition bags are super light, weighing roughly 4.9 lbs, with gender- and size-specific harness and hipbelt systems. The bags are also sleek and non-bulky. The lid detaches and converts into a lumbar pack.

Pro: The lid-turned-lumbar pack has a pouch for a small hydration system.
