The Osprey Rev 12 is an excellently designed pack—one of a series from Ospery, ranging in size from 1.5L to 24L—and is also one of the most comfortable we’ve ever tested. It has many of the bells and whistles of a hiking daypack, yet rides smoothly and bounce-free on hard-charging mountain runs.

Fit/Comfort
For being one of the largest packs I tested in this roundup, the Osprey Rev 12 also rides amazingly well and bounce-free. It’s part of Osprey’s relatively new Rev line of trail-running packs, which include 1.5L, 6L, 12L, 18L and 24L options. With a nod to Osprey’s heritage as a successful backpacking company, the Rev 12 is unusual in the trail-running world for coming equipped with a hip belt and more substantial mesh harness system to promote breathability between your back and the pack. Incredibly, these features do not feel like overkill on the pack; rather, they help it ride exceptionally smoothly, even when fully loaded with gear.

You can’t run home and change when you are on the road. So what you pack or, rather, what you don’t pack is really important. The following selections are great for when you fly, drive, bus, train, boat, or otherwise transport yourself away from your abode.

Play the carry-on game with an ace in the whole by knowing your bag is airline approved. Even if you stuff the Osprey Porter 46, using all of its compartments to its fullest to port all your running kit and what my mother calls “normal clothes,” of which I have very little, according to her. The Porter is padded enough to shield both you and your belongings…

TheBigOutside.com – Featuring Talon 18/Tempest 16 – July 31, 2015

I’ve used enough daypacks over the years to notice the little differences between the many models out there—and to be very picky about them. Not only do I favor lighter, simpler daypacks for everything from dayhikes with my family to ultra-dayhikes, but I expect comfort, good access, and versatility, and I know what I like in features. With those requirements in mind, I took Osprey’s Talon 18 out on several dayhikes of varying lengths—including a 27-mile, 12-hour day—during a six-day rafting trip down Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon River in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.

It carried comfortably even throughout my longest day. The molded-foam, Airscape back panel flexes and doesn’t have the rigidity of a wire frame, but has good support for 15 or more pounds and keeps the pack’s weight down; it also allowed some air circulation across my back.

If, like me, you prefer a lightweight, multi-use pack for dayhiking, adventure racing, or scrambling peaks, with simple but smart organization, the men’s Talon 18 and women’s Tempest 16 are good choices. Osprey’s Talon series includes several models from 6L to 44L. The women’s Tempest series, with a gender-specific harness, is available in models from 6L to 40L.
