Osprey set a new standard for ultra-lightweight packs in 2008 with the introduction of the Exos Series, which became a standard on the Appalachian Trail and with ultralight enthusiasts still in search of comfort; and the company redesigned the series this year integrating Osprey’s Superlight AirSpeed suspension system and new Exoform harness and hipbelt. It is a minimalist pack still packed with features that make long trips enjoyable.

One problem with a pack this size is how much it can weigh before you’ve even put anything in it; the other is how few occasions require so much carrying capacity. The Osprey Xenith is one of the lightest “big” packs out there (starting at just 5 lbs, 3 oz with the 75 model) but it also happens to be the best fitting, with a suspension and hip belt system that are comfortable right off the rack and with a maximum load. The Xenith resembles other packs Osprey has had in its line since the early 1990s, but is actually only a year old…
