Yes, outdoor and travel gear ain’t cheap. And while the old adage of getting what you pay for rings true for high-quality, performance-oriented products, a handful of innovative companies do more than just charge a fair price and deliver the goods. They’ve also integrated some refreshing altruism into their identity, looking to keeping the world we love to explore sustainable. Here are seven of the best.

Colorado-based Osprey’s affection for the outdoors is self-evident; it’s literally written into most of their larger packs in the form of a label listing the principles of leave-no-trace backpacking and hiking. And that commitment extends to other aspects of their production, from an HQ that runs on 100 percent renewable energy to making packs entirely constructed of recycled material to corporate philanthropy with sustainability, social, and environmentally focused partners.

Kim Havell says she started her ski career as an alpine ski coach in the Telluride valley. From there, she gradually made the transition into freeskiing, climbing and ski mountaineering. Today, Kim says she has skied on all 7 continents – with first descents on 4 – and explored over 50 countries…Gear Institute caught up with her to find out a little more about her gear needs when out adventuring.

Gear Institute: Sounds like safety is job one for much of your gear—that’s something we like to see. Beyond those items, what do you carry? And more specifically, you get exposed to a ton of gear from sponsors—what items from those supporters do you really love?

Havell: I love my Adventure Medical Kit first aid kits. They are light, well-thought-out kits designed specifically for outdoor needs. I load everything into one of my Osprey Packs—the size and model depends on my specific plans, but they have a pack ideal for nearly every adventure.

May 11, 2015

With summertime just around the corner, many U.P. residents will be heading outdoors to spend some time admiring Mother Nature.

For those people who intend to spend their days living out of a backpack, it’s important to have the right ‘pack’ on your ‘back.’ Backpacks come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and prices. In the end, the most important thing to do when buying a backpack is making sure that it fits your body properly.

“We have a special way to measure everyone that comes in to give them the proper size and then we can start looking at different Osprey products,” said Luke Olson of Osprey Packs. “We do have a product for everyone, but the most important thing that we emphasize is how the backpack fits. We want to make sure that it’s properly fit for every person that walks out the door.”

The outdoor industry has always been a blend of passion and business: people who love their sport and the places they ply it in, who also have to make a living in an increasingly competitive world. Here are some companies that have done well and done good at the same time…

Osprey
The Colorado-based pack maker goes beyond things like employee volunteer days and bike commute programs to venture in a world many outdoor companies fear to venture: conservation policy. In addition to supporting organizations like The Conservation Alliance, Osprey’s marketing director trekked to Capitol Hill to help lobby congress for the passage of the 2009 Omnibus Public Lands Bill, a massive package of wilderness and wild and scenic river designations that Barack Obama signed into law in March 2009.
