Packing: This illustration from Osprey explains things nicely. Stuff light, bulky items like your sleeping system into the bottom of the pack. On top of that and as close to your back as possible, carry heavy items like your bear canister/food or laptop (this guide being equally applicable to Australians planning their gap year in Europe). If you’re carrying a hydration bladder, some packs will give you a dedicated sleeve for it located here while others will locate their water bottle pockets outside the pack, at this same height. With little fanfare, Osprey Packs ticked off more than four decades of continuous operation this year. What started as a small shop selling custom packs designed and sewn by Mike Pfotenhauer  (photo above) grew over the years into the industry-leading manufacturer of performance packs…

Today, Osprey is still independently-owned, and it makes packs and accessories for backpacking, cycling, hydration, snowsports, climbing, travel, and kids.

Headquartered in Cortez, Colorado, Osprey maintains a product development office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, near the factories where it manufactures. We caught up with Pfotenhauer for a look at 40 years of pack design…

When Edgar Parra travels for business, he usually eats about three Snickers bars a day…That is why he squirrels away 40 or so candy bars for a two-week expedition up Mount Aconcagua, a 23,000-foot peak in Argentina that is the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere.

Over the past decade, he’s whittled down his packing list to 104 items.

His main piece of luggage is an Osprey 70-liter backpack and a North Face 120-liter waterproof duffel bag. He needs to carry his personal items, safety ropes and technical gear for the trip, plus camping gear and food for himself and his clients. The duffel usually gets to base camp by mule or by donkey. The rest goes on his back…
