Members of Osprey Packs upper management, sales staff, city officials and the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce made their way to the entrance of the company’s new distribution center during a lull in the rainstorm on Wednesday.

With a snip of oversized scissors, the group marked the official opening of the company’s latest facility, in Business Depot Ogden.

Osprey Packs, a manufacturer of high-performance outdoor and travel packs, opened a new 108,000-square foot warehouse in March.

Osprey Packs, headquartered in Cortez, is supporting earthquake reconstruction efforts through collaboration with the Ridgway-based dZi Foundation. Osprey announced this week that its matching program, Double Down for dZi, will raise money to help Nepal’s most remote communities recover.

“Based in Colorado, the dZi Foundation is a trusted friend and neighbor to the Osprey family,” Sam Mix, Osprey Packs marketing outreach manager, said in a news release. “dZi is uniquely positioned to aid in the long-term, reconstruction efforts.”

The dZi Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Ridgway, Colorado with a full time staff of 20 Nepali nationals working between their headquarters in Kathmandu and the remote communities where their projects take place. dZi currently serves almost 30,000 people in an expanding network of remote villages, focusing primarily on basic infrastructure like school buildings, toilets, drinking water systems and bridges as well as agriculture initiatives.

Osprey Packs’ decision to move its distribution center and 18 employees from Cortez to Ogden, Utah, last year caught many off guard, but as CEO Tom Barney explained to Montezuma County business and government leaders on April 29, it was a strategic decision that allowed it further invest the business’ growth overall and in its Cortez headquarters.

“Southwest Colorado is simply not a distribution hub for the U.S. We needed interstates, airports, FedEx,” said Barney at the annual Montezuma County Economic Development Association meeting.

The change positioned Osprey’s domestic fulfillment near the national rail network, which allowed the company to better fill shipments to its retailers in more environmentally friendly way. It also places distribution in a transportation hub while focusing most other company functions in Colorado…

This year to help with their big sale, Down Wind Sports brought in an expert who deals specifically with backpacks. The store was able to get an employee from Osprey to Marquette for the weekend.
Osprey has backpacks for every kind of outdoor adventure.

“This is a perfect opportunity to get all of your questions answered,” said Bill Thompson, Co-Owner of Down Wind Sports. “Osprey Backpacks makes some killer packs. They’re custom moldable, so they’re one of the few companies in the industry that does that.”

“Down Wind is one of our favorite retailers,” said Luke Olson, the Midwest sales representative for Osprey. “When we heard about their yearly sale that goes on, we decided to come out and team up wit them. Obviously we are showcasing our products, our backpacks, but these weekends are more about education for us. Educating the customer, answering all of their questions, giving them that expert pack fit that really allows them to enjoy their time out on the trail.”
