When you’re traveling, knowing where your luggage is at all times—and never having to wait at the baggage carousel—can make your journeys a lot less stressful. But not all carry-on bags are created equal, so we put dozens of them to the test this year and picked our favorites. With a wide variety of size, style, color, and price, these winners include options for every type of traveler.

Osprey Ozone 22-Inch
The Tester:
Michael Alan Connelly, Editor, Fodors.com
The Review: Osprey’s redesigned Ozone line looks so much better than it used to, but it still has the same great features. The main sell here is the lightweight aspect—this one only weighs 4.37 lbs. That fact alone made it a joy to test out on a bus trip to Maryland over a long summer weekend. There’s plenty of space inside the bag to fit a week’s worth of clothing; the internal and external compression straps make it easy to pack a lot…

Whether it’s wrongly taken off the baggage claim or loaded on an incorrect flight, losing a checked bag is an occupational hazard for frequent fliers, which is why most carry their personal affects on instead. For the seasoned traveler, a carry-on bag needs to hold a few changes of clothes, maybe an extra pair of shoes, have pockets for mid-journey access, and meet the requirements for fitting in an overhead compartment (typically 22 x 14 x 9 inches). Every one of these soft-sided carry-ons meets these criteria…

The Place: DEN > DCA > EZE > LHR > KEF > CDG > RAK > CMN > DOH > HKG > SYD > MEL > LAX > SFO > LAS > DEN

The Time: Global video shoot for Gray Line Worldwide over 21 days last October-November.

What we Thought:

Style: Sleek enough to avoid sticking out at a five star hotel, yet outdoorsy enough to work for a ski weekend, the Ozone 22” has clean lines and smart design. But don’t expect bells and whistles. The bag draws little attention and the light grey color scheme allows for quick identification when traveling with other baggage. As I described to a friend, it made me look less dirtbaggish

Between dodgy weather, overbooking, and long lines, holiday air travel can feel like a game of Russian Roulette. Choosing your travel kit wisely will help eliminate some of the uncertainty. Whether you’re flying to British Columbia for a backcountry hut trip, jetting home to Chicago to see family, or sneaking off to Mexico with your SUP, these five stalwart, versatile bags won’t guarantee your gear will make it to your final destination, but they will ensure that when it does, it’ll still be in one piece…

When carrying is the last thing you want to do with your carry-on, roll with the Ozone 22, a savvy, wheeled companion that’s ideally sized for tight squeezes in the overhead bin or beneath the seat in front of you. Osprey makes some bomber gear, but at 4 pounds, seven ounces, the 46-liter Ozone is one of its lightest, most streamlined bags, with a brushed aluminum ergonomic retractable handle and three grab loops for slinging overhead. Six interior and exterior pockets help you pack smarter so you can move faster—proof that you don’t have to skimp on perks to shave weight.

At only 6 pounds 2 ounces, the Ozone convertible 22″ represents the latest offering from Osprey Packs, Inc. This extremely lightweight piece of luggage is the maximum carry-on size and can easily be hoisted into overhead racks on board trains and planes. The nylon fabric may look lightweight but it’s quite sturdy and can sustain the rigors of travel without ripping.

The Ozone convertible’s high road LT™ chassis and ergonomically-designed extendable handle enable one to wheel it around airline terminals and urban pavements with ease. Also, padded handles allow one to carry this piece of luggage should one chose to do so. For those instances when using wheels or carrying one’s luggage is not optimal, an adjustable/removable harness and a modified/removable straight ErgoPull™ hipbelt allows travelers to carry the convertible as a large backpack. An optional zip-off daypack that includes a padded laptop/tablet sleeve and internal organization can be attached to the convertible and then removed for use as a daypack.

The Best Wheeled Carry-On Bags

Spot Cool Stuff never checks our luggage if we can avoid doing so. Like most frequent fliers, we travel with a wheeled bag that will fit through the airport security x-ray and into an airplane’s overhead compartment. Unlike most frequent fliers, we also run a travel review blog and are fanatical about travel gear. So we’ve spent a lot of time researching the best wheeled carry-on bags. A lot of time. From conception, through research and writing, this post has been 11 months in the making.

Why so long? Partly because the market is flooded with rollaboard luggage options. But mostly because no single wheeled carry-on stood out to us as better than all the others — as with so many products, the “best” option depends on what an individual consumer is looking for.

Given that, we focused on the best wheeled carry-on bag in five different categories. Factors we considered in making our selection included build quality, value for the price, looks, weight, cargo capacity (while staying under the 22-inch maximum height requirements that many airlines set for carry-on luggage) and bag features. Best Lightweight Wheeled Carry-On

Osprey Ozone

The Osprey Ozone is lightweight. Really lightweight. So lightweight that you’ll go WOW when you first lift it.

How lightweight? The Ozone weighs in at about 4 pounds (1.8kg). That makes the Ozone the lightest weight wheeled 22-inch bags on the market today.

For comparison, the average wheeled 22-inch rollaboard weighs about 9 pounds. That’s about the same as the Ozone weighs after you’ve packed it with a camera, footwear, two changes of clothes and a few accessories! See our full review of the Osprey Ozone for more.

Traveling light when it comes to needing a jet-liner to get around isn’t just nice these days, it’s strategic. Not only will a carry-on help you avoid baggage fees, but a tough, well-designed carry-on will protect your stuff from all the other carry-ons people try to shove into the overhead.

And Osprey likely has a bag for you.

Planning a weekend getaway? Then the company’s line of Ozone Ultra-Light luggage is something to consider. These heavy duty, wheeled bags obviously were influenced by the company’s backpacks: There are ample pockets for stowing big and small items, a mix of tough ballistic and heavy duty nylon went into the bag’s construction, and a 6001 T6 aluminum frame supports it.

How big should you go?

The Ozone 22 offers 2,807 cubic inches of storage and weighs 4 pounds, 8 ounces, while the Ozone 28 offers nearly 5,000 cubic inches of space and weighs 5 pounds. There’s even an Ozone 18, which holds 2,197 cubic inches and weighs an even 4 pounds, a size great for youngsters.

While the Ozone 22 (MSRP $229) is perfect for two or three days on the road, going beyond that could be pushing things unless you will have laundry facilities. It also might be a bit small if you need to take extra shoes with you, unless you have another carry-on.
