Spring Skiing in The San Juans of Colorado

The Osprey Brand Team, a group of 10 ambassadors reporting from the field at consumer outdoor events across the country as well as reporting on adventures in their own neck of the woods, brings you a quick post from Durango, CO.’s Jim Philpott. When we last checked in with Jim he was coming off a successful race of the “Grand Traverse” from Crested Butte to Aspen. Turns out he still hasn’t put away his skis…

This is Jim checking in from down here in Durango.  This spring in the backcountry has been super good as far as snow conditions but a little strange on the weather side of things.  We’ve been getting a ton of wind and dust which is a little strange for these parts, but with the wind comes a little moisture.  Anyway, this spring has been all about big skins and good snow down here in the San Juans; the snow has been super stable in the higher elevations providing us with some great couloirs skiing.  The past couple of weeks have been spent in and around Silverton skinning and skiing lines around the Sultan peak and Bear Mountain zone which has been amazing.  The San Juans never cease to amaze me and even though the snow is melting fast there should be plenty of turns left.  I think the desert might be the next stop for me, see you in Utah!
